Sparta or Lacedaemon was a prominent city-state in ancient Greece
in south-eastern Peloponnese. Around 650 BC, it rose to become the

Given its military pre-eminence, Sparta was recognized as the overall
leader of the combined Greek forces during the Greco-Persian Wars,
the most famous battle of which was the heroic stand at Thermopylae
where 300 Spartans and 700 Thespeians fought under the leadership
