The Blond Ephebe
Sappho bust

The Blond Ephebe. This wonderful bust, thus named because when it was found there were still vivid traces of his golden hair and blue eyes, is brimful of the new spirit. The hair is tied in two braids behind and falls low on the forehead in front. The face, with the tight lips, has a gloomy, instrospective expression. A work of the years just before the Persian catastrophe (485-480 BC). It is believed that the young athlete's pose will have been the same as that of the Kritios boy.
