Beautiful decorative fresco
painting depicting the most popular - and dangerous - Minoan athletic event, the Bull-Leaping,
an acrobatic spectacle in which daredevils toyed with charging bulls.
Risking life and limb on their agility, the acrobats would grasp the horns of the
onrushing bull and somersault over the animal's head. Wild bulls were captured and trained
for these exhibitions.
This fresco is a fine example of the Minoic culture, flourished on the island of
Crete in 1500 - 1000 B.C. The Minoans were among the earliset masters of fresco, the art
of painting on plastered walls. This medium was the civilization's major art form :
interiors of villas and palaces on Crete were covered with fanciful impressions of life
and nature in the seagirt Minoan world. Fresco artists were widely patronized by royalty
and the wealthier members of society.
This fresco was found at the Palace of Knossos and it is dated to 1500 B.C., Archaeological Musem of Heraklion.
