They represent some of the most typical warrior types in Greek history, from the famous Spartan Phalanx Infantry to the glorious Macedonian Infantry of Alexander the Great which conquered half the known world of the era.

Spartan Elite Warrior, 480 BC

The Spartan Elite Warriors were an elite troop of hardened, experienced veterans who undertook the most dangerous and difficult tasks of war. The most famous one was the 300 of the battle of Thermopylae under the leadership of King Leonidas in 480 BC.

Spartan Warrior Chief, 490-480 BC

Warrior Chiefs were the heads of the various Spartan tribes that contributed with men to the war effort. Each tribe bore a unique symbol on the shields of its warriors. 

Spartan Phalanx Captain, 500-450 BC

Phalanx Captains (lochagos) were the captains of the mighty Spartan phalanx, the most effective and destructive infantry formation of the era.

Spartan Infantry Officer, 5th century BC

Spartan Officers were masters of the art of war, had leadership skills and the right of life and death over the men they commanded. Strict discipline and relentless training were the tools with which they created fiercest warriors.

Spartan Hoplite, 8th century BC

Early Spartan Hoplite with a typical bell-shaped cuirass and large oval shield. The characteristic heavy armour was later abandoned in favour of agility and speed.

Thespeian Hoplite, 480 BC

A typical Thespeian Hoplite of the time of the battle of Thermopylae bearing a slashing sword (kopis). 700 Thespeians were the only ones that stood next to the 300 Spartans facing the Persian hordes of Xerxes.

Athenian Hoplite, 490-480 BC

Athenian Hoplite of the time of the Persian Wars. Well equipped and fearsome in battle, they were just as brave and lethal as their Spartan counterparts. Note how more elaborate and colorful their armour is compared to the Spartans. 

Athenian Cavalry Officer, 5th century BC

The Athenian Cavalry was a highly effective elite troop used for charges against scattered enemy troops and ambushes on enemy camps. Noteworthy are the sturdy armour and winter combat boots.

Spartan Mercenary, 400 BC

Spartan Mercenaries were the best soldiers money could buy in the post-Peloponnesian war era. The most famous group of mercenaries were the Ten Thousand under Xenophon which fought against Artaxerxes at the battle of Cunaxa in 401 BC.

Macedonian Infantry Officer, 4th century BC

Macedonian Officers were the captains of the sarisa-bearing Macedonian Hoplites, the only ones that could defeat the Spartans in battle. Under the leadership of Alexander the Great, the Macedonians conquered a vast territory stretching from Egypt to India. 

Macedonian Hoplite, 4th century BC

Macedonian Hoplite with typical armament. Their 6m (20 ft) long spear, the sarisa, was the most lethal infantry weapon known to the ancient world before the Romans. A firm, well trained squad of Macedonian sarisa-bearers was impossible to stop on open ground.
