Spartan Gold Vapheio Cup #1

Ancient Greek Gold Cup found in the Vapheio tholos tomb in Lakonia, near Sparta.

One-handled cups with flaring straight sides are a common type of early Mycenaean cup. This gold example bears a remarkable decoration, which covers its entire surface.

A bull is captured by peaceful means: a man ties a rope around the bull’s leg, while the animal mates with a cow; three grazing bulls complete the composition.

Dated to the 15th century BC. National Archaeological Museum of Athens.
