Athens was the richest and most popular city-state in ancient Greece. Its sea-faring trade reached from Gibraltar in the West to the Middle East. Together with Sparta and other allied Greek city-states, they defeated the much larger Persian invasion army in the 5th century BC.
Athens is considered the city where Philosophy, Democracy and the Dramatic Arts were born.
