Exact museum reproduction of a fine ancient Greek red figured
calyx Krater. (more information on Red figure pottery…)
Our Greek pottery items are handmade in Greece in a small family
workshop using natural quality materials, superb craftsmanship and
attention to detail. They are licensed and modeled after museum
pieces from all over the world and bear the lead seal of authenticity.
This krater features on one side, Hermes handing over the child
Dionysus to the nymphs and Papposilenos, in the ivied glens of Nysa.
Zeus had taken the foetus of his unborn son when Semele, the mortal
mother, perished and sewn him into his thigh until the time of birth
arrived. He then sent the baby to be brought up to Nysa out of the
way of Hera’ s jealousy. (find out more about Dionysus here…)
On the other side, three Muses on mount Helicon, one of them seated
and playing the barbiton, the long-armed lyre.
About 440-435 BC, The Vatican Museum, Italy.
