An exquisite Greek Orthodox Icon of St. Emmanuel of Rethymno.
Emmanuel of Rethymno together with his brother Angelis joined the fight against the Turks in 1821 on mainland Greece and fought bravely for the freedom of the Motherland. When they returned to Crete and went to pay the established taxes to the mandated Turks, they were denounced as apostates from Islam to Mehmet Pasha of Rethymnon. They were beheaded in front of the “Great Gate” of Rethymno on October 28 1824.
Made using traditional materials (selected aged timber frames, egg tempera, 24K gold leaf, natural powder paint and varnishes) and old techniques.
The icon bears the artist’s signature on the front and the seal of authenticity on the back.
We can have any image or Christian scene hand made on commission. Please take a look at an indicative list of additional icons available, or contact us for more information.
