An exquisite Greek Orthodox Icon of St. Nilos founder of the Giromeri Holy Monastery, handmade & handpainted by an expert Greek hagiographer.
Saint Nilos Erihiotis (1228-1334), came from Constantinople and was a descendant of the imperial generation of Laskaris. After an invitation from the residents of Thesprotia, he proceeded southwards to the area of Giromeri where a small fraternity of hermits gathered near him. According to legend the hermits spotted a glittering light on the opposite mountain and upon investigation they discovered the icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary Odigitria (the Conductress). It was at this site where the foundations of today’s Monastery were built.
Saint Nilos died on January 2, 1334 at the age of 106 years.
Made using traditional materials (selected aged timber frames, egg tempera, 24K gold leaf, natural powder paint and varnishes) and old techniques, this icon is an exact reproduction of an antique Byzantine masterpiece.
The icon bears the artist’s signature on the front and the seal of authenticity on the back.
We can have any image or Christian scene hand made on commission. Please take a look at an indicative list of additional icons available, or contact us for more information.
