An exquisite Greek Orthodox Icon of St. Varus the Martyr, handmade & handpainted by an expert Greek hagiographer.
Saint Varus was an early Christian saint, soldier and martyr. St. Varus was a soldier stationed in Upper Egypt who had the task of guarding a group of 7 monks awaiting execution. It is stated that Varus was already a Christian at this point, but had weak faith. After witnessing one of the monks perish, the faith of Varus became reinvigorated, and he joined the monks. For this, Varus was tortured, and had his body hung from a tree.
St. Varus is commemorated on 19 October in the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches.
Made using traditional materials (selected aged timber frames, egg tempera, 24K gold leaf, natural powder paint and varnishes) and old techniques, this icon is an exact reproduction of an antique Byzantine masterpiece.
The icon bears the artist’s signature on the front and the seal of authenticity on the back.
We can have any image or Christian scene hand made on commission. Please take a look at an indicative list of additional icons available, or contact us for more information.
